The Tales of HoffmanMarvels & Tales
AbstractIn 1836 Théophile Gautier published “Les contes d’Hoffmann” in the Chronique de Paris. Gautier’s piece is a beautiful analysis of what made the German Romantic writer E. T. A. Hoffmann so appealing to the French public, and it contributes to our understanding of nineteenth-century notions of the fantastic.
