This short article describes several contexts of Indonesian daily life where the recited Qur’an plays an important role. The article is distilled from the book: Women, the Recited Qur’an, and Islamic Music in Indonesia (University of California Press, 2010) and is also a reflection of the long collaboration between the world renown reciter, Hajjah Maria Ulfah and the author, ethnomusicologist, Anne K.
