Abstract
In this lecture, presented at George Mason University in November 2016, long time research collaborators Hajjah Maria Ulfah of Jakarta, Indonesia, and ethnomusicologist, Professor Anne K. Rasmussen explain and demonstrate several styles of recitation and their use in a variety of contexts from daily prayers to international competitions. Maria Ulfa's visit to the US was sponsored by the Indonesian Embassy in Washington DC in collaboration with a series of programs produced by the Smithsonian Institution, Freer Sackler Gallery, "Performing Indonesia: Islamic Intersections."
