Abstract
Despite international investment in reducing gender inequity and gender-based abuse, violence against girls and women remains pervasive. In 2021, the WHO conducted the largest ever global study examining rates of violence against women, and found that around 736 million women, or 1 in every 3 women, have experienced physical or sexual violence, with many more also experiencing verbal abuse, a lack of safety, and denial of basic needs. Gender-based violence (GBV) begins early; many victims experience abuse and violence before the age of 25, and school related gender-based violence (SRGBV) is now increasingly common, particularly in low-income settings.
Gender-based violence is steeped in gender inequity and harmful norms. From birth, children are exposed to gender stereotypes which can limit their ability to be who they want to be and form equal, healthy relationships. Preventing gender-based violence can be supported by the work done in education systems, which can act as a catalyst for generational and cultural change. However, the role that schools can play in preventing gender-based violence and abuse remains underexplored.
Exploring the conditions that lead to gender-based violence is a challenging, complex domain of research, particularly in the education realm. This session offers a new and important perspective on the drivers of gender-based violence, and advocates for a more nuanced approach by the education sector in addressing its origins.
Based on a comprehensive review of international research, policy, and practice, the session will examine the pre-conditions for gender-based violence and highlight ways to monitor and challenge its development in student communities. The session also explores effective school-based practices that can shift culture, challenge harmful norms, and address the root causes of GBV. The session will conclude with a series of recommendations that can further support education systems to contribute to a future free from gender inequity and abuse.
