Abstract
Environmental issues in Africa have long been the focus of policymakers, academics, community organizers, and individuals who rely on the local environment for energy, water, and food. Recent attention to climate change has increased the visibility and relevance of these issues to the development process. This book explores the relationship between the environment and development through case studies from eastern and southern Africa. The collection of chapters is dedicated to Professor Kwesi Darkoh, an African geographer and environmental scientist whose prolific career spans fifty years and four continents. The editors join many of Darkoh’s former students and colleagues to commemorate his work as a pioneering postindependence African scholar.
