Severing the External Argument from its Verb
Phrase Structure and the Lexicon (1996)
  • Angelika Kratzer, University of Massachusetts - Amherst
Abstract
The paper argues that external arguments of verbs are not true arguments of their verbs, but are introduced by an independent head, the Voice head. This was my first paper arguing that part of a verb's argument structure is syntactically constructed, relying on a Davidsonian (or semi-neo-Davidsonian) event semantics.
