An Investigation of the Lumps of Thought
Linguistics and Philosophy (1989)

Abstract
This is the (no longer current) older 1989 version of my Lumps of Thought paper. Chapter 5 of my 2012 book Modals and Conditionals has a substantially revised version of this article. The section about accidental versus non-accidental generalizations (section 5) was completely rewritten, for example. Please check out the new version in the book, which cannot be posted here for copy right reasons.
