Abstract
This is a reprint of the original 1986 version of the paper, which appeared in the Proceedings of the Chicago Linguistic Society. A completely revised and considerably expanded version appears as chapter 4 of my 2012 book Modals and Conditionals. Please check out the latest version of the paper. It is really quite different from the early version.
