Abstract
This is a handbook article that compresses my 1981 article The Notional Category of Modality into the format required by the de Gruyter handbook series. This work is now superseded by the 2012 version of The Notional Category of Modality, which revises and updates the original article. Please use the 2012 article for an accurate account of my analysis of modal expressions.
