About Maria Angela Jardim de Santa Cruz Oliveira

I have a keen interest in international law policies and comparative legal analyses. I hold a Ph.D. in international law from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, Switzerland. My research focused on international trade agreements before domestic courts in a comparative perspective. I was awarded a Fulbright scholarship for my LL.M. studies at Harvard law School, where I conducted research on the similarities and differences between common law and civil law countries, and compared the supreme courts of various countries. I have published several articles in law reviews on international and comparative law in the United States, Brazil and Argentina. Since 2009, I am a corresponding editor for the publication International Legal Materials of the American Society of International Law.
My background includes a variety of international legal assignments and continuing education. I have provided consultancy services on projects for legal reform in Africa, and have assisted Brazilian diplomats in trade disputes before the WTO Dispute Settlement Body in Geneva. I have attended courses at the Hague Academy of International Law, the International Institute of Human Rights in Strasbourg, the Austrian Study Center for Peace and Conflict Resolution in Stadtschlaining, and the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington. I have postgraduate studies in economic and corporate law from the Fundação Getúlio Vargas in Brazil, and a bachelor’s degree in law from the University of Brasilia. I have worked for several years at the Supreme Court and at the Prosecutor General's Office in Brazil, as well as at the international legal cooperation department of the Brazilian Ministry of Justice.
