About Andy SL Tan

I am Assistant Professor of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the Harvard School of Public Health and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. My background is in public health, health promotion, and health communication research and practice.
Examples of my research areas include cancer communication behaviors in cancer prevention and survivorship; impact of direct-to-consumer advertising of cancer treatment; formative and evaluative research of health campaigns for tobacco cessation, healthy nutrition, and chronic disease management; case studies of nutrition policy interventions; youth risk behaviors including substance use; and quantitative analysis in observational clinical studies.
My recent work focuses on measuring exposure to e-cigarette communications through advertising, media coverage, and interpersonal exposure and how these exposures influence public attitudes, behaviors, and policy opinions.
I look forward to connecting with other interested health communication/public health professionals to discuss ideas related to any of the following research or practice areas:
- Health campaign message design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation
- Studying interpersonal and mediated communication in healthcare settings
- Leveraging new technologies in health communication interventions
- Developing health communication theories
