Abstract

In the early stages of the modern gay rights movement, Boston played a pivotal for many reasons - its social justice bent, its concentration of academic institutions, and its relatively young population, just to name a few. It’s no wonder then that Boston became a hub for LGBT media as a way of getting the word out to gays across the city, then the state, and eventually the entire nation. Originally designed as an activist tool, newspapers like Gay Community News led to an entire industry that goes far beyond activism. Speakers will delve into exactly what made Boston such an important role in the birth of our livelihood.
