Many conditions cause pain in the dentist’s territory including dental, joint, muscular, nerve, headache, sinus and psychological conditions. The overlap in locations and symptoms can trick or frustrate the patient and dentist. While a comprehensive knowledge of them is impractical for you, recognizing those groups when they present will avoid much trouble. We will describe the distinguishing features of each category. Examples from our clinic will be used to help you apply your knowledge.

1. Recognize an orofacial pain as dental, joint, muscular, neurological, headache or psychological in nature.

2. Avoid inappropriate and often exacerbating treatment based on misdiagnosis.

3. Initiate appropriate and timely treatment or referral.
