About Andrew Woods

Andrew Woods DipAppSc(Syd), GradDipIntesiveCareNursing(UTS), AssocDegArts(SCU), MCSc(SCU), GradDipAP(SCU), PhD(Candidate)

Over the last ten years, Andrew has made a gradual transition from clinical practice to his current role as a lecturer for the School of Health and Human Sciences at Southern Cross University. Andrew has over 20 years of clinical experience predominately in intensive care and coronary care nursing. Areas of teaching interest range from undergraduate clinical reasoning through to postgraduate healthcare leadership. Along the way he has developed competence with simulation technologies and online learning platforms. His current philosophy of teaching and learning, framed by his nursing background, previous education and life experience is continually being shaped by critical reflection and discussions with people much wiser.
With an interest in design and optimising the student learning experience from the unit to curriculum level, Andrew’s more recent research interests have aligned with the scholarship of teaching and learning. His PhD research is focused on the social construction of nurse educator identities and practice which has helped him recognise the value of social constructionist forms of learning. Associated with this work, Andrew has recently taken an interest in peer assisted learning and peer learning communities as an important factor in the broader student learning experience.
Andrew has quietly pursued an interest in writing and has penned a few short stories. Not surprisingly, his research passion is in the qualitative world and the power of stories to provide meaning in life. He stops short of being too critical, and accepts that quantitative data can be a valuable tool for testing theories. However, he believes the complex world of human life needs qualitative methods for meaningful, appreciative, respectful and sustained understanding.
