Abstract
New York City cabdrivers occupy a unique place in the imaginations of New Yorkers and, indeed, in the larger national consciousness. Taxis are a common part of the city’s landscape, and their drivers are stock characters in film and literature. For many visitors, cabdrivers are the gateway to the city. They are iconic figures, both emblematic of the city’s rough-and-tumble character and sage guides to its many secrets. It is therefore surprising that few historians have explored the role cabdrivers have played in the city’s labor and social history. Graham Russell Gao Hodges’s Taxi! A Social History of the New York City Cabdriver brings readers into the private and public worlds of the cabdriver while offering a sophisticated view of the city’s labor history.
