Abstract
In 1988, one of the most devastating earthquakes pounded Armenia - the South Caucasus republic of the former Soviet Union. This natural calamity came in the background of another disaster, this one created by ethnocentric nationalists. The author explains, from the perspective of someone who lived through the breakup of the Soviet Union and the many sided societal crises that had been building for decades.
