Abstract
No longer a buzzword, transliteracy, or the holistic consumption of information across a multitude of media and platforms, is recognized as an essential literacy for 21st century living. Transliteracy is the value-added component derived from interacting, combining, mapping, and producing in the digital, visual, oral, and printed environment. It requires critical thinking, multiple literacies, and purpose.

Attendees will learn how students in the presenters’ information literacy classes use non-traditional platforms such as Wikipedia, blogs, newspapers, magazines, newswires, and YouTube to begin their academic research. They brainstorm keywords, create research paper outlines, and learn about scientific studies and journals from Harper’s Magazine, the New York Times and Seth Meyers’ monologues (they “love studies” on Late Night with Seth Meyers). This approach is effective because learning is situated in students’ ‘everyday’ worlds; transliteracy knows no boundaries – knowledge and skills are acquired within the academic, personal, and popular realms.
