Reference Questions: A Noticeable Pattern
The Reference Librarian (2016)
  • Anamika Megwalu, York College
Abstract
Reference services play a crucial role in the academic lives of the students in 4-year colleges, regardless of how the services are provided. Katz, in his book, Introduction to Reference Work, categorized reference queries into four categories: directional, ready reference, specific-search questions and in-depth research. This article discusses how in a typical semester, these types of questions are encountered by librarians in a noticeable pattern. It also emphasizes the fact that reference services cannot be fully replaced by automated systems.
