I am interested in research at the intersection of diversity, ethics, and IS, particularly as it relates to culture, gender, and ethnicity, and how managers may develop policies and use different strategies to foster team and organizational effectiveness. I have studied IT professionals in the US, Ukraine, Russia, India, and Mexico, with colleague Virginia Kleist at West Virginia University and others, and we hope to expand to other countries in the future.

One issue of concern throughout the world is the lack of accessibility to research articles. I am a proponent of openly accessible research, with the development of a cost-sharing model that is sustainable for publishers, libraries, universities, authors, and students. Along with Mike Whitman, I co-authored a paper looking at open access (OA) strategies that could benefit IS researchers, educators, and students in the US and across the world and promote widespread sharing of research. While we found that IS researchers are generally favorable toward open OA publishing opportunities, the field has not embraced the model yet.

Branching from my interest in ethics, culture and IS, I am currently working on a research project with co-authors Mike Whitman and Herb Mattord. We are looking at student attitudes toward computer ethics. We have surveyed a large number of students over several years, with responses from different countries and different levels of students. We plan to investigate differences among the groups and how we can better understand the ethical frameworks that students use when evaluating how to interact with technology.

As cybersecurity challenges continue to mount, numerous legal and ethical challenges have become evident. While much of my research has used the individual level of analysis, I am currently working on several projects that examine the policies and procedures used by critical infrastructure systems, co-authored with Andy Green and others. Although we would like to think that critical infrastructure systems at the local, state, and national levels are secure, accurate, and timely, this research explores potential problems with the current system and proposes steps to take to improve the cybersecurity of the systems.

I am also interested in the emergence of cyber defense competitions and information security education, and how we can prepare current students for real-world situations. Along with Andy Green, I co-authored a recent article that develops a list of consistent, reusable, measurable, and clearly defined learning outcomes, for cyberdefense competitions.

I teach classes related to research methods, legal and ethical issues, and management information systems in the Master of Science in Information Systems, the Master of Science in Healthcare Management and Informatics, and the WebMBA programs at Kennesaw State University. My research activities directly relate to topics discussed in the classroom. I'm always learning new ideas from students and colleagues, and I have a lot of fun - in the classroom, doing research, and even doing service. I love what I do!
