About Professor Amy Cutter-Mackenzie

Professor Amy Cutter-Mackenzie BEd(Hons)(Griff), PhD(CQU)
Has also written under the name Amy Cutter.
Professor Amy Cutter-Mackenzie is the Deputy Head of School Research, as well as the Research Leader of the SCU ‘Sustainability, Environment and Education’ (SEE) Research Cluster at Southern Cross University.
Amy commenced her career as a primary school teacher in Queensland Australia and later moved into academia after completing her PhD. Amy’s research focuses on the conceptualisation and articulation of environmental education and sustainability in childhood, schools, teacher education, higher education and community. Her present research is heavily centred on children’s ontological framings of/in environment. Amy’s latest two books are: ‘Young Children’s Play and Early Childhood Environmental Education’ (Springer, co-authored with Edwards, Moore & Boyd) and ‘The Socioecological Educator’ (Springer, Co-edited with Wattchow, Jeans, Alfrey, Brown & O’Connor). Amy is also the Editor of the Australian Journal of Environmental Education (Cambridge University Press) and Consulting Editor for the Journal of Environmental Education, the International Journal of Early Childhood Environmental Education (NAAEE), International Journal of Environmental and Science Education, and Educational Studies.
In the past 5 years Amy has generated substantial external research income (including 2 Australian Research Council Discovery grants), having completed over 20 research projects in the areas of environmental education and sustainability and cross-disciplinary research fields. Her current projects are focussed on children’s environmental experiences (across different cultural minority and majority contexts), climate change education, and children’s consumption and its implications for early childhood environmental education.
Further, Amy has been recognised nationally and internationally for teaching and research excellence. She has received an OLT (Office of Learning and Teaching, Australian Government) Citation and OLT Teacher Excellence Award, and has recently been bestowed as a Fellow of the Australian Association for Environmental Education (AAEE) for a “demonstrable outstanding contribution” to environmental education and its research in Australia and internationally.
