About Amy White Helms

I am a Biology and Microbiology Professor at Collin College at the Preston Ridge Campus in Frisco, Texas. I love science and I absolutely love getting to teach students at this level.

As I like to tell my classes, life is not multiple choice, with 4 or 5 clear answer choices. If anything, life is multiple choice with infinite answers or possibilities, and most of the time there is nothing clear about them! In my courses, I choose to focus on critical thinking and problem solving. For me, the strategies you use to get at solving a problem are just as important, if not more important, than the actual problem itself. College is a time for this kind of learning and thinking, but I find my students aren't used to this approach.

As a neuroscientist, I am fascinated by how the brain learns and retains new information and I try to apply principles of meta-cognition and brain-based learning in all my biology and microbiology classes.
