Abstract
Background/Context: The complexity of modern health care necessitates proficient team-based care (Mitchell et al., 2012), specifically surrounding nutrition counseling within the boundaries of each discipline's profession-specific nutrition competencies (Livne, 2019). Nutrition education can be a unifying topic in interprofessional education (IPE) programming to promote role delineation and team work between disciplines (Interprofessional Education Collaborative [IPEC], 2016).
Implementation: Dietetics and occupational therapy faculty, through project based work, engaged students in activities for team awareness and role delineation within existing coursework such as needs assessment activities, focus groups, and progression to classroom learning activities surrounding health promotion together. Student attitudes of interprofessional health care teams were measured using The Student Perceptions of Interprofessional Clinical Education–Revised (SPICE-R) instrument. Evolution of findings propelled development of an simulation-based IPE case in the didactic classroom between both disciplines, with a focus on evaluating and prioritizing nutritional needs for older adults with chronic health conditions as a team.
Evaluation Plan: Mixed method pre and post data analysis completed in both phases of the partnership including student perceptions of interprofessional clinical education and discipline specific competencies mapped to IPEC competencies (IPEC, 2016). Across all students six out of seven questions reflected an increase in positive perceptions of interprofessional clinical education according to the SPICE-R.
Outcomes and significance of outcomes: Student perceptions after this partnership grew most in the areas of role definition and understanding through IPE and that all health professional students should be educated to establish collaborative relationships. Intentional IPE programming around relevant health topics can be a transformative experience for future health care professionals.
