Abstract
The purpose of the study is to analyze the impact of emotional intelligence (EI) skills in
fieldwork (FW) performance and determine how MAOT and OTA program curricula can
facilitate growth of EI in preparation for FW success. The study reviews scores provided by
FWEd on the AOTA Fieldwork Performance Evaluation (FWPE) and specifically the
professional behaviors and communication section to represent EI related skills during the
student FW experience. It also examines student self perception of EI skills prior to
beginning FW and after completing Level II FW. In phase 1, trends indicated higher scores
on EI questions on 2nd rotation for OTA students. Phase 2 indicated lower overall scores
and EI scores for 2nd placements of both MAOT and OTA student. This project is intended
to display our raw data and the initial trends of this multi- year project. The first two phases
of this project will inform more specific hypothesis development, possible curriculum design
changes, and lead to next steps of our data analysis with 2021 and 2022 comparisons.
