Abstract
Production data on more than 11,000 state and collective farms in Ukraine were obtained through the VASKhNIL Research Agreement between the Center for Agricultural and Rural Development (CARD) at Iowa State University and the Ukrainian Institute of Agrarian Economics. Of particular interest to this study are data on input use, resource endowments, cost of production, output, prices, and labor. The major objectives of the study were to (1) organize, develop, and provide a descriptive analysis of data from state and collective farms in Ukraine; (2) summarize and analyze major trends and economic indicators for Ukrainian agriculture; (3) analyze the technical efficiency of Ukraine's agricultural sector using frontier production function estimation; and (4) provide policy assessments and disseminate research results.
