Abstract

What is most significant for the American Catholic Church today?

Dr. Maria Pilar Aquino discusses her opinion that the lay members of the Church and their actions have overshadowed the importance of the Second Vatican Council and the role of the hierarchy. She specifically cites the movement of Medellin as an empowering event for lay people that has become greater than actions of the bishops alone.

About the Interviewee:

Maria Pilar Aquino, S.T.D. currently teaches at the University of San Diego. She is a Catholic Latina Theologian whose primary areas are liberation theologies, social ethics, and feminist theologies, with special interests in intercultural approaches, conflict transformation, and religious peacebuilding studies. She was co-founder and first woman president of the Academy of Catholic Hispanic Theologians of the United States and has authored more than fifty books and Journal articles.

About the Interviewer:

Dr. Alfred Benney is a professor of Religious Studies at Fairfield University. He has a Ph.D in Theology from the Hartford Seminary Foundation and teaches courses in Non-Traditional American Religions and Christian Religious Thought. His research interests include "how people learn"; "the appropriate use of technology in teaching/learning" and "myth as explanatory narrative". He has published work on teaching with technology.
