Abstract

What are the responsibilities of a Catholic University in today’s world?

Dr. Maria Pilar Aquino discusses the problem of the growth of poverty around the world and its relationship to Catholic Education. Aquino finds that the disconnect between the core mission of a Catholic University towards justice and respect and the lack of passion it produces within its graduates who often go on to hold power to act against these injustices to be very disturbing.

About the Interviewee:

Maria Pilar Aquino, S.T.D. currently teaches at the University of San Diego. She is a Catholic Latina Theologian whose primary areas are liberation theologies, social ethics, and feminist theologies, with special interests in intercultural approaches, conflict transformation, and religious peacebuilding studies. She was co-founder and first woman president of the Academy of Catholic Hispanic Theologians of the United States and has authored more than fifty books and Journal articles.

About the Interviewer:

Dr. Alfred Benney is a professor of Religious Studies at Fairfield University. He has a Ph.D in Theology from the Hartford Seminary Foundation and teaches courses in Non-Traditional American Religions and Christian Religious Thought. His research interests include "how people learn"; "the appropriate use of technology in teaching/learning" and "myth as explanatory narrative". He has published work on teaching with technology.
