Abstract
A microscopic use-wear analysis was conducted on lithic artefacts of two sites in the Tyrolean Fotsch Valley, Ullafelsen and Kaseralmschrofen. 82 artefacts from Ullafelsen and 22 from Kaseralmschrofen were subjected to high and low power analysis. Different edge damage patterns, micropolishes and organic residues are interpreted in order to reconstruct the former use of stone tools. The analysis complements a previous traceological study of the modified lithic artefacts from Ullafelsen (Pawlik 2011). Almost one fourth of the unmodified debitage and lithic fragments from Ullafelsen had use-wear traces and could be identified as used tools and fragments thereof. Those unmodified tools were a significant addition to the lithic toolkit at Ullafelsen and were used similarly to the modified artefacts reported earlier. Wear traces could be detected on the majority of the analysed artefacts from Kaseralmschrofen. The activities identified on the lithic tools from both sites were mostly associated with the repair and maintenance of the hunting gear and the processing of hide and leather.
