Abstract or Description

Participants in this session will examine the history, influences, and impact of enslaved Africans, specifically the Gullah Geechee community, on coastal Georgia. The presenters will facilitate conversations on the ways in which Gullah Geechee narratives should live in and alongside the Georgia social studies standards, and how to insert these often-silenced voices into the curriculum. Additionally, the presenters will demonstrate the importance of place and local histories associated with Black communities across the state of Georgia to support participants in developing lesson ideas focused on their own geographic areas.
