Abstract

In the summer of 2007, the dream of financial stability was possible. It was possible and reasonable to believe that if you worked hard, and saved a portion of your paycheck you could one day save enough for a well-deserved retirement in your fully owned home. Although this may be called the American Dream, it was also the hope of many European citizens to save enough assets to comfortably retire at some time in the future. Responsibility, integrity, and hard work are universal aspirations within western civilizations that many believe will lead to a financially secure life. The recent recession destroyed that dream for many individuals both in America and Europe. To restore these common values to our financial systems, the Group of Twenty (“G-20”) committed their nations to restoring the integrity, stability and responsibility of the global financial system. This article attempts to explain the post-recession regulatory process in American and Europe and their interaction.
