Biography
Before coming to Loyola in 1983, Professor Raphael taught history in college, worked as a lobbyist at the Indiana general Assembly, clerked for Chief Judge Thomas E. Fairchild of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, and practiced law at a major Chicago law firm. His current courses are concentrated in the areas of constitutional law and criminal procedure. He has argued appeals of serious criminal convictions in federal and state courts and has supervised students working on criminal appeals briefs. Raphael has represented clients on death row and has written about capital punishment and racial discrimination in jury selection. He serves as a contributing editor of the American Bar Association publication, Preview of United States Supreme Court Cases. He has served in various governmental positions in the Village of Oak Park, currently as a member of the Board of Zoning Appeals.
