About Alan Geist, Ph.D.

Dr. Alan Geist has held the position of athletic director at Cedarville University since 2008. He oversees an athletic department that includes 16 Yellow Jacket varsity sports and cheerleading.

Geist’s first year was marked by a number of changes in the department. The most crucial of these were the University’s approval into the first year of the candidacy process for membership into NCAA Division II and the unveiling of a new athletic logo.

Competitively, the Yellow Jackets finished among the Top 50 NAIA programs in the country in the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings in each of his first three years at the helm.  CU was named co-champion of the Presidents’ Cup as the top program in the NCCAA in 2008-09 and was the runner-up in both 2010-11 and 2011-12. The Jackets also won the American Mideast Conference Men’s All-Sports Award in both 2008-09 and 2010-11.

Geist has been a leader in the formation of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, one of the newest conferences in NCAA Division II. He currently serves as the chair of the Athletic Directors Council.

Geist, a 1983 graduate of Cedarville College, returned to campus in 2005 as the program coordinator for the CU sport management program. He added the responsibilities of Associate Athletic Director in 2006 under former A.D., Pete Reese.

Before returning to the University, Geist was a high school athletic director and principal, the Assistant Athletic Director at the University of Mobile (Ala.), and the Athletic Director at Mount St. Clare College (Iowa). He is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and the North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM).

Geist earned a master’s degree in sport management from the United States Sports Academy in 1989 and his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University in 2001. He and his wife, Lynn, also a graduate of Cedarville College, have two sons, William and Ryan, and reside in Springfield.
