About Alan Filreis

Al Filreis is Kelly Professor, Faculty Director of the Kelly Writers House, and Director of the Center for Programs in Contemporary Writing at the University of Pennsylvania. He is co-founder and co-director of PennSound. His books include Stevens and the Actual World, Modernism from Right to Left, Secretaries of the Moon (with Beverly Coyle) and Counter-Revolution of the Word: The Conservative Attack on Modern Poetry. With Anna Strong Safford, he has edited The Difference Is Spreading: Fifty Contemporary Poets on Fifty Poems (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2021). His new book, 1960: When Art & Literature Confronted the Memory of World War II and Remade the Modern will be published by Columbia University Press in September 2021. He is the creator and lead teacher of ModPo, an open online course on modern and contemporary poetry. His monthly podcast, "PoemTalk," features conversations with three people in the world of poetry about one poem each episode. For more, see his web site.
