This chapter has been prepared in response to concerns about the shift in the demographics of the Australian workforce – as the population ages, fewer young people will be available to replace retiring cohorts. The solution of encouraging older people to stay in work implies there will be an increased need for people to keep learning in order to stay abreast of changes in work practices. The authors make the argument that if people are to have an orientation towards lifelong learning in their work, they should work in jobs for which they are best suited. If there is a good fit between a person and a job, then the person will be more likely to be engaged and predisposed towards learning. The chapter then considers how schools (and other educational institutions) can fulfil their central role in matching people to jobs. The authors conclude that schools and universities are already making an important contribution to their students having an orientation towards lifelong learning by providing them with the opportunity to identify locations in the world of work which fit them well. They then present some policy implications of this conclusion.
