Abstract
This paper presents recent advances and literature review of High speed Permanent Magnet (PM) machines. This is done due to the importance of this kind for many applications in various fields, such as energy storage flywheel, grinding spindle and milling spindle for machine tools, centrifugal compressor and blower for natural gas pipeline, vacuum pump for vacuum and analytical equipment and so forth. Recently more attention has been paid to the development of high speed PM generators driven by micro–turbines as prime movers with local conversion at load points in smart grid systems. High speed PM machines provide a substantial reduction in size and weight, and are higher in power density. PM machines are ideal for high–speed applications due to their simple structure and high power density. High speed motors offer a reduction in machine size and weight because as a machine's speed increases, its size decreases for a given output power. This paper summarizes some of valuable research findings on these topics.
