About Adam Ka-Lok Cheung

I am Assistant Professor at the Department of Social Sciences, The Hong Kong Institute of Education (HKIEd). Before joining the HKIEd, I was a postdoctoral fellow at the Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore. I am a family sociologist and received my Ph.D. in Sociology from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2012. My research interests are in the areas of changing family structure and relations in Chinese societies. My doctoral dissertation focuses on the factors of domestic violence in a Chinese society. I am also currently involved in multiple research projects that study 1) the patterns and determinants of living in one-person households in China, 2) factors and impacts of domestic outsourcing in Hong Kong and other Chinese societies, 3) life-course trajectories of gender role and family attitudes, 4) cross-border marriage and family dynamics. I was awarded the Global Scholarship for Research Excellence – GNOOC Grants 2009-2010 (the Chinese University of Hong Kong) for a research visit to the University of Toronto in 2010 (August to December). In 2013, I received an honorable mention as the second place in the 2nd Early Stage Family Scholar Award Competition from the Committee on Family Research of International Sociological Association.
My research are published or accepted for publication in international peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of Marriage and Family, Journal of Family Issues, Demographic Research, Violence Against Women, Violence & Victims, Journal of Comparative Family Studies, Social Transformations in Chinese Societies, and other edited books and encyclopedia.
