Pink icing and the sticky question of popular cultureFaculty of Arts - Papers (Archive)
AbstractTaking Pamela Mordecai's recent collection of short stories, Pink Icing (2006), as a case study, this essay examines how the local and global are played out in the literary life of the author, in the short stories themselves, and in the publication and distribution of the book. Concomitantly, the essay addresses the question of popular culture: in waht way this collection might be seen to constitute such, and how its location in a 'local' or 'global' context might affect a determiantion of popular or literary, familiar or exotic.
