When her sister needed a kidney donation, she received a revelation: she would give her own kidney to save her sister. This was not a decision made lightly. Many in the African American community balk at the idea of organ donation—often due to cultural, ethnic, or religious concerns. From the moment she received the divine call, her family began a process of spiritual transformation that left them closer to God and to one another.
With honesty, depth and humor, Kay T. Payne takes readers on a real-life journey through the process: the decision to donate, the unsettling moments in the hospital, and finally the strengthening and transformation of the family. The experience was both daunting and spiritually uplifting, changing Payne’s family forever.
Both a deeply personal story and a spiritual reflection, Divine Order places organ donation in the context of an African American family, but its true message is much broader: organ donation is a human event and one of the most selfless acts of love possible. Payne’s narratives and anecdotes reflect this important truth.
Often philosophical and always inspiring, Payne’s experience is one of one of overcoming adversity through self-determination and divine guidance presenting a challenge to others, particularly African Americans, to consider organ donation. What’s unique about Divine Order is that it focuses on the personal life-events that serve as prelude, as well as the transformational after-effects, providing spiritual meaning to the act of donation in the many lives that were touched. Above all, Divine Order is a true story of love—the love of sisters, family, and God.
