16 Becoming a Supervisor
Beginning Your Counseling Career: Graduate Preparation and Beyond

Abstract
This chapter describes the process of becoming a counseling supervisor, beginning with a definition and an overview of clinical supervision. Although supervision and counseling have much in common, supervision is a distinct skill with its own models. Included in this chapter are descriptions of three types of supervision models: psychodynamic models, which involve supervision from a single theoretical perspective; developmental models, which focus on trainee development; and process models, which highlight the supervisory relationship. The American Counseling Association Code of Ethics (ACA) and the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) have developed supervision best practices. There are state board requirements that individuals who wish to provide supervision must meet, as well as a national credential that is issued to approved supervisors. The chapter also covers assessment, feedback, evaluation, and remediation in supervision.
