About Crystal Hayes, Ph.D., M.S.W.

Crystal M. Hayes, Ph.D., M.S.W. is Clinical Assistant Professor of Social Work at Sacred Heart University. Her research and practice area focuses on human rights, and racial, gender, and economic justice. She is specifically interested in issues of reproductive justice for incarcerated people at the intersections of race and gender. Crystal began her social work career working in community-based mental health as a clinician where she worked with women and children in maternal and pediatric mental health. In additional to community-based mental health, Crystal's work social work career includes non-profit leadership and management, social work education, and community organizing. Crystal's current research uses qualitative tools to explore gender and trauma informed reproductive justice issues for incarcerated women's health and implications for policy, research, and prison reform. Crystal works with a variety of human rights organizations and agencies internationally and abroad.
