About Alexandra Perez Rivera

Dr. Alexandra Perez has worked for the past 15 years in the area of pharmaceutical outcomes research. She received her PharmD from Nova Southeastern University and completed an MS in Pharmacy Administration, pharmacy practice residency, and fellowship in Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has worked as a faculty at Nova Southeastern University College of Pharmacy since 2008 and is currently an associate professor and associate chair in the Sociobehavioral and Administrative Pharmacy department.
Dr. Perez is currently a principal investigator in an internal grant that seeks to compare the effectiveness of dual versus triple antihyperglycemic regimens in cardiovascular and renal outcomes using a very large database of electronic medical records from UPMC (formerly known as the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center). In terms of collaborative research, Dr. Perez has published over 30 manuscripts and book chapters and delivered over 100 poster and podium presentations in national and international conferences. In her pharmacoepidemiologic studies, she has demonstrated that medication regimens for secondary prevention of morbidity and mortality (antihypertensives, antilipidemics, etc.) in patients with diabetes are not optimal. Her work has also shown that racial/ethnic disparities in the management of patients with diabetes exist. These studies were developed using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). She has experience using other national surveys, and claim and electronic health record data. Also, she has demonstrated the clinical effectiveness and economic value of various types of clinical pharmacy services among patients with diabetes, cardiovascular, and other diseases through retrospective studies and systematic reviews. Finally, she has conducted a few studies evaluating the impact of teaching a data analytics course among pharmacy students.
Dr. Perez has extensive experience teaching pharmacoeconomics, data analytics, and other research topics in core and elective professional and graduate courses. She is a Ph.D. advisor, has served on several dissertation committees, and has served as a senior research mentor in many residency projects.
At the College of Pharmacy, Dr. Perez has served as a chairperson and member of the Admissions Committee and has also served in the Assessment and Continuing Contract and Promotions committees. At the University, she has served as a member of the Faculty Advisory Council. Nationally, she has represented the College of Pharmacy as a national delegate at the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Midyear and Annual meetings, is a planning board member of the NIH/NIDDK Network of Minority Research Investigators (NMRI), and a steering committee member in the ENACT Network based out of Indiana University.

She is a member of the International Society of Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR), Academy Health, the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, and the American Diabetes Association. She is also a member of the Rho Chi pharmacy honor society, Phi Lambda Sigma pharmacy leadership society, and the honor society of Phi Kappa Phi. She was awarded as the College of Pharmacy Professor of the Year 2021 - 2022.
