The University of Iowa Libraries has converted a few print texts to databases, working with an in-house programmer and web developer. These are resource intensive projects, so we do few of them and only for items that are institutionally important. In each case, we are re-envisioning the print text to see how it can be most effectively used online and as such are not merely hosting a previously published PDF but creating a new way to interact with the material. This presentation discusses issues and considerations that have come up in the process.

The University of Iowa Libraries has a small e-publishing program as part of our repository and other digital collections. We host a variety of faculty produced scholarship, including videos and image collections, as well as more traditional textual materials. Our working paper and journal collections include a variety of titles, from strongly institutionally affiliated titles to society titles. Setting up this program has been a learning process for us, particularly since we had not previously been a journal publisher. We view e-publishing as part of our commitment to open access scholarship and see this as a way in which we can provide support to faculty, as well as increasing awareness of open access publications. While we prefer to work with fully open access titles, we do support two subscription titles with moving walls for previously print only titles. Our e-publishing program is completely separate from our University Press, a humanities focused, monograph only publisher. The Libraries and the Press have a strong working relationship and we have collaborated in hosting the back content for several monographic series, as well as creating databases out of two of their reference works. This presentation will discuss our program, primarily focusing on e-journals, and share some of our lessons learned.

Electronic theses and dissertations are beginning to replace the traditional print format with a number of benefits. Stored in the university’s institutional repository, these treasured resources are no longer hidden from view, taking up space on archival shelves. Researchers everywhere can instantly access the ETDs, whose content is easily enriched through a multitude of electronic file types. At the University of Iowa Libraries new collaborations are emerging between digital librarians and catalogers in their efforts to streamline processing. Candidate-supplied metadata gets massaged, enriched, cross-walked and recycled to appear in various guises on a multitude of platforms. Walls break down as dialogues emerge from new workflows, opening new possibilities to leverage skill sets between departments and develop new forms of cooperation.

This presentation will cover general trends and developments in journals and ways libraries can be involved in journal publishing, particularly as trusted repositories of information. Hosting journals is a good way to educate the editors about copyright and open access and scholarly communication. The presentation will cover the types of things you should consider when starting such a service and what type of support you can expect to provide. Practical examples will be given from The University of Iowa’s work with several journals, including migrating online content to a better platform, turning print only titles into online titles and also new titles.

Items in a digital collections are frequently not static, instead being updated in some way. When this information comes from a content provider mixed with new materials, the updates need to be separated from the new content. It also needs to be clear what content specifically was updated. Is it a new image or did a single image become compound images? Was metadata added or removed and were these changes in a field that we have also modified? This presentation will cover using Microsoft Excel and Access to find the updates so that the work can then proceed in CONTENTdm

Improving our Local Electronic Serials through Standardization and Migration to New Platforms

The University of Iowa has several currently published journals scattered across the institution, many on out dated simple html sites. We also have a small but growing group of digitized older titles. We are beginning to implement bepress, are continuing to use CONTENTdm, and are a partner in the Hathi Trust. Each of these tools will play a role in our local serials. We are trying to bring some order to the chaos by pulling the titles together, using appropriate tools. We will work closely with campus partners to encourage serials will be most effectively discovered, linked to and archived. We are migrating existing electronic content as well as adding new electronic content (through digitization and hopefully new publication). In addition, our Digital Library Services staff is working closely with our subject specialists and our scholarly communication task force members. This presentation will cover how we are moving this content, working with content providers and choosing the most appropriate display and structure for each title. We began work with bepress in late fall and are moving several titles there as quickly as possible. We are also in the process of loading our student newspaper, a railroad journal and some legislative serials into CONTENTdm. At this point, we don’t know if the Hathi Trust will present serials well, but we need to keep this in mind as the CIC/Google partnership progresses.

The University of Iowa is planning to spend concerted effort implementing Verde during the first six months of 2008. This presentation will cover what we were able to accomplish during that time. Iowa will be focusing on the SFX-Verde synchronization, followed closely by adding licensing information to display through SFX (particularly for ILL concerns and for selectors to get information regarding our archival access). We will also be working on the connection with ALEPH in preparation for SUSHI statistics. By the end of the six months we also hope to have established basic workflows for new materials as well as for A&I databases.

This pre-conference covered the first four sessions of the Serials Cataloging Cooperative Training Program’s Integrating Resources Cataloging Workshop, focusing on electronic resources. Steven Miller defined integrating resources and how to identify them. He then explained initial decisions to make when cataloging these resources. He covered the MARC fields and AACR2 rules that are unique for integrating resources and new to people accustomed to cataloging e-journals. Miller discussed how records should be updated to reflect changes in the resources, including how to update records created before the new rules. He concluded by discussing the difficulties of maintaining records for these resources. Recorder, Wendy Robertson.
