About Vadym Mochalin

Dr. Vadym Mochalin was born in USSR in 1971 and moved to USA in 2005 to Philadelphia. Vadym received his B.S./M.S. in Biochemistry from Department of Chemistry, Donetsk National University (Donetsk, Ukraine) and Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from Institute of Physical Organic and Coal Chemistry, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (Donetsk, Ukraine). Dr. Mochalin was granted tenure as associate professor of chemistry in September 2021.

Vadym’s research interests are unified by one common theme: development of new materials to solve most important global challenges in health care and energy. Over the past seven years he extensively worked on nanodiamond for biomedical composites, drug delivery, imaging, and supercapacitors, publishing over 40 papers on the subject, including the highly cited first review on nanodiamond in Nature Nanotechnology.

He is currently involved in development of nanomaterials for biomedical applications (biodegradable composites for bone surgery and tissue engineering, designer theranostic nanoparticles), energy storage (development of MXenes - a new large family of 2D materials - for supercapacitors and batteries, carbon nanoonions for high power micrometer sized supercapacitors), and computational modeling of materials (structure and properties of novel 2D materials, transformations of nanoparticles).

Solving global problems requires global collaboration and Vadym works closely with colleagues and students in departments of Chemical & Biological Engineering, Mechanical Engineering & Mechanics, and Biomedical Engineering (Drexel University), as well as Oak Ridge National Laboratory, University of California Los Angeles, Shanghai Advanced Research Institute (China), Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (Israel), Paul Sabatier University (France), Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nurnberg (Germany), Tokyo University of Science (Japan), Institute of Physical Organic and Coal Chemistry (Ukraine), and other places around the world.

In his free time Vadym enjoys reading, traveling, computer  programming, and photography.
