Abstract
Abstract
Problem: College aged women rely on healthcare providers and electronic resources to educate and inform them regarding reproductive health options.  Healthcare providers must ensure comprehensive and unbiased contraceptive counseling consistent with best practice guidelines.
Purpose:  This quality improvement (QI) project purpose was to implement an online pre-visit contraceptive choice learning module within a college health service to standardize clinical practice with best practice guidelines and increase patient knowledge of reproductive health options. Objectives were: 1. Increase clinician consistency in practice and adherence with American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) 1 and World Health Organization (WHO) Medical Eligibility Criteria (MEC) 2 for contraceptive prescribing, 2. Improve patient knowledge of reproductive health options.  Methods: The clinician intervention was review of ACOG and WHO MEC guidelines, an electronic health record (EHR) template, and the contraceptive choice module. Self-assessment of clinician practice alignment with ACOG and WHO guidelines was assessed pre- and post- review. Patient intervention was the contraceptive choice module. Patients completed a questionnaire to assess knowledge pre- and post- module. A long-term comparison of contraceptive utilization will be made between NCHA-ACHAII survey years 2016 and 2020. Outcomes: Patients who accessed the contraceptive choice pre-visit learning module reported 88% increased knowledge. Clinicians reported 14% increase in knowledge of ACOG and WHO guidelines and increased documentation of patient knowledge of guidelines 36%.
