Professor of Law
Professor Taiawagi Helton joined the faculty in 2001, and teaches environmental law, property, and Indian law.
Helton received his juris doctorate at the University of Tulsa College of law, where he earned certificates in environmental law, Indian law, and public policy. He served as editor-in-chief of the Tulsa Law Journal, and was named the Outstanding Law Student of the Class of 1999 by the Oklahoma Bar Association. He began his legal career as a clerk for the Honorable Robert H. Henry, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit.
Admitted to the Oklahoma Bar in 1999 and the Cherokee Nation Bar in 2000, Helton is a member of the Order of the Curule Chair and Phi Kappa Phi. He has lectured extensively on topics relating to Native American issues, is a member of the Board of Directors of Oklahoma Indian Legal Services, and is a Special Justice for the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes Supreme Court.
