Leadership Development for Women: The Opportunities and Challenges of Research and Practice in International Settings
Sponsored Caucas, Academy of Management (2008)

Abstract
This caucus will provide Academy members a forum to discuss the opportunities, challenges, and issues related to the research and practice of leadership development for women in international settings. Clearly, the topic of developing leaders is of utmost importance in all settings (e.g., higher education, business, government, and nonprofit). Many strategic leaders and managers (men and women) are particularly concerned with developing women for leadership roles. Women are needed to move into positions of influence within these various settings throughout the world, and they must be prepared. There are many interesting and unique developmental issues and challenges in each country/region based on its history, tradition, culture, and current situation. Further, new opportunities for leadership development research and practice are now emerging in many of these countries/regions. This international dynamic will provide Academy members the opportunity to engage in an innovative caucus where those interested individuals will meet with other scholars, practitioners, and students to discuss this multidimensional and multifaceted topic. Round tables will be available for participants to convene based on their interests in specific countries, regions, or continents (e.g., Middle East, Asia, Central America, or Africa). A short (3-4 minute) introduction by the organizer will provide ideas for groups to use as a framework to guide their roundtable discussions. This will include an outline of potential opportunities, issues, and challenges that they may want to consider in their discussions. The organizer will also collect names and email addresses of attendees interested in future networking. This list will be distributed by email shortly after the conference concludes. We believe that this caucus will offer a convenient, informal way for Academy members who share a topical interest and professional concern regarding the leadership development of women in international settings to find one another and to develop a sense of community around this interest.
