About Stephen J. Lilley

The Board of Trustees at Sacred Heart University has awarded professor emeritus to Prof. Stephen J. Lilley, Ph.D. Steve Lilley served SHU for the past 29 years.  His early research focused on the social implications of the Civil Rights Movement in a social context and the role of Martin Luther King as a charismatic leader.  Dr. Lilley encouraged college students to explore and discover the Civil Rights Movement in the United States in contrast to civil rights in different cultures.  Dr. Lilley became was a pioneer in the area of sociology and technology, particularly as it related to the emerging influence of the internet which was in its infancy at the time.  He explored the ethical implications of internet monitoring, social networking in the context of privacy and the commercialization of Facebook in a range of prestigious peer -reviewed journals.  It was his book “Transhumanism and Society:  The Social Debate over Human Enhancement” that served as the apex of Dr. Lilley’s scholarly work where he addressed the tension between science and religion and the interpretation of socio-technological revolutions.  Dr. Lilley’s scholarly contributions represent his prescient understanding of technology related issues of ethics that continue to grow in social, political and legal significance in the 21st century.  Dr. Lilley has been an invaluable teacher to thousands of students during his tenure at SHU.  He has taught a wide range of courses in sociology including quantitative methods, theory and methods courses, sociology of health care, computer ethics, technology and society, social movements.  Students have always regarded Dr. Lilley as a kind, compassionate, and caring professor.  Dr. Lilley’s service to the University has been exemplary serving as Chair of the Department of Sociology from 2008-2021, Director of Assessment for the College of Arts and Sciences, serving as a Faculty Senate representative, helping create the UAA constitution and bylaws, serving as chair of the Institutional Review Board, working on past NEASC Accreditations, Social Work reaccreditation, among many, many other committees.  Dr. Lilley has left an indelible mark on the Department of Sociology, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the University with his commitment to scholarship, teaching, and service.
