The use of the telephone interview in educational research: one case study

Stephen Dinham

Abstract

There has been a tendency in some circles to regard the telephone interview as being largely the preserve of political pollsters and market researchers and thus inappropriate for 'serious' research. This paper examines background to the use of the telephone interview before providing a case study where it was used successfully to interview resigned teachers. Based on the literature and the researcher's own experience with the method, a series of guiding principles are provided for others interested in either using the method, or evaluating the work of others who have utilised the telephone interview in their research.
