The Advanced Skills Teacher - a missed opportunity?
Abstract
The Advanced Skills Teacher (AST) position was introduced into Australian education in the early 1990s to provide an alternative to the traditional career path in schools which requires teachers to leave the classroom if they desire promotion. The authors made a survey of almost 900 staff, 170 of whom occupied AST position, at 71 Sydney schools. It confirmed many concerns raised elsewhere and identified additional problems. While the goals of AST are laudable, the authors find it a missed opportunity and in need of urgent reassessment.
