Teaching and Teachers’ Families

Stephen Dinham

Abstract

Extends an earlier study of the impact of educational 'reform' on teachers' lives and resignations, through interviews with a self selecting sample of 57 NSW teachers' partners. Looks at the demographics of the sample and responses to open ended telephone interview questions. Findings lead to the conclusion that the expectations on teachers have never been greater yet the status of teaching is at its nadir, and that unrealistic expectations may need to be rethought in the light of the relationship difficulties expressed by those interviewed.
