Teaching in Context

Abstract

This chapter addresses the issue of teacher satisfaction based on research by the author and others. The author examines the increasing gap between the increased expectations placed on schools and teachers by society and teachers' declining status. The author's recent research supports a three-factor or domain theory of teacher career satisfaction and dissatisfaction. The third domain of forces found outside the school and in the realm of society has assumed greater importance in recent times.
